What is the LFD?
The Low Fidelity Disconnect is an arts project established by Djevara as an extension of the band and the label imprint Genin. Our aim is to promote and encourage music and art, and to provide facilities and services to artists, musicians, and film makers. Services offered are broad in scope and application; it acts as an art centre/studio/gallery, set location for music videos, rehearsal rooms, live venue, recording studio, film gallery – in fact, we are still to test the limits of what we do.
We also offer guitar setups, website design, filming and photography. In addition also enjoy a close association with Orange & Blue Studios in Lewisham, South London, for music recording and production.
What’s the philosophy?
Our work is based very much around the concept of freedom of expression. Our values rest very highly on this principle. Information is the most precious commodity we have, and any act that restrict freedom of information is a akin to a crime against humanity. The central tenet of what it is to be human is the ability to think and to question our existence. Without this, we remain trapped in a limbo, a prisoner of our our restricted consciousness.
Our showcases have been built around live music. We have exhibited art from a number of artists. Our own events have been free. Free because we believe in freedom of expression, and there should be no division between the freedom to express your ideas and the freedom to take new ideas and to learn and develop from them. If you have to pay to come and see a band, then the expression of the idea hasn’t been free.
The idea that it should be free to enjoy also means there is nothing in between you and the idea. When you pay to get into a club, there is almost an obligation, self imposed, that you must enjoy it because otherwise you have wasted your money. If you don’t pay, you have nothing material to lose, but everything to gain. Even if you don’t like what you see/hear, the point is it will affect you in some way, and whether good or bad you will take something away with you. It will have changed you, and forced you to view the world in slightly different terms.
All this is, however, almost incidental to the fact that what we do is music. Our goal is quite simple, and that is to get people to see and hear new ideas that they would never have normally seen or heard. We invite those artists who we know and respect and who we know feel at least as passionately about what they do as we do. Too often we come across ‘art’ that is no more than populist nonsense that has too little to say, that serves no other purpose than to appeal to the lowest common denominator for the broadest possible commercial appeal. It doesn’t make you question, and it doesn’t make you think.
Leary, when he said “Think for yourself, question authority”, wasn’t just asking people to challenge the social hierarchy, he wasn’t calling for anarchy. Authority is anything that represents the status quo, any idea that you take for granted. Question everything.
