The Painted Lady presents... Djevara, Thumpermonkey Lives!, Poino What a weekend!  Tonight (sat 28th August) sees Djevara return to one of the best small venues in South London, The Fox & Firkin (Lewisham), with an astonishing line-up which includes our absolute favourite band Thumpermonkey Lives! (new record out on GENIN on Mon 6th Sept! It’s awesome!) and Poino who feature Chuckles (of The Display Team, who also have a fantabulous record out through the Genin stables!).  Could be too awesome for words.

New albums in September from Thumpermonkey Lives! and She Makes War

Monday, August 9th, 2010

September is rolling up to be one heck of a musical month with two more exciting, underground releases promised: Thumpermonkey Lives! new record “We Bake Our Bread Beneath Her Holy Fire” be up on 6th September through Genin Records.  The album is not anything but phenomenal, without question the best underground release this writer has ever heard – ingenius and witty songwriting, beautiful production, astonishing execution and utterly rocks.  It’s hard to describe, but imagine Frank Zappa, David Bowie and Queen were asked to collaborate to do a B-movie soundtrack for metalheads and you’ll be in the ball-park area, but with only a fractional idea of how good it is.  Honestly a loss to anyone who doesn’t hear this.

On 1st September solo female DIY artist She Makes War releases her long-awaited debut “Disarm” after an impressive online video series of singles.  Excitement has beeen buzzing all over the net, and little wonder – with its own unique style and character, this is fantastically earthy, grungey alternative pop straight from the underground, like a crossbreed between the sounds of Nine Inch Nails, Carina Round and with a hint of the spirit of Riot girl, but with a feisty, independent London edge.  The London DIY scene is desperately under-representative of female artistry and this is a record which will deservedly assert to redress the balance!

London’s DIY underground bursts into action in 2010

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Happy New Year. 2010 has started with a flurry of activity and excitement in London’s burgeoning alternative DIY underground, with a number of nights and venues putting on some shows well worth checking out. Without further ado, here’s a very quick (and not necessarily comprehensive) round-up of some awesome stuff happening.

RIP THIS JOINT! – Set in the basement of The Constitution in Camden, this night plays host to some of the most intimate, most eclectic and startlingly high quality DIY nights in town for the bargain price of £2. Always worth going.

END OF RADIO – Set up by a couple of members of One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong and Orders Of The British Empire, the line-ups are not always consisting of bands with ridiculously long names – expect every type of progressive or post-rock outfit at their deliciously cosy, vibey nights at The Jester (downstairs @ The Cross Kings, 126 York Way).

ROTTEN LUCK – Putting on free shows at Deptford’s place of choice – The Bird’s Nest as well as The Grosvenor, these shows are always passionate and visceral affairs. South London fights back :)

LI GRAND ZOMBI – New nights just started at the Unicorn and Scar Studios in Camden

… and many more. It is recommended to check out myspace.com/londontransmission which always has listings of a plethora of fantastic live music

FREEDOM FESTIVAL!

FREEDOM FESTIVAL Flyer

Djevara would like to invite you to:
FREEDOM FESTIVAL 2
A celebration and defence of civil liberties.

Once again we feel the need to shout and make a stand in the face of increasing authoritarian government and diminishing freedoms: CCTV everywhere, compulsory ID cards, national databases, “anti-terror” laws used for everything except fighting terror, ridiculous anti-protest laws (arrested for baking a cake, anyone?), more & more music restrictions, arbitrary arrest, extra-ordinary renditions and 28/42/92 days detention without charge or trial… Stop already.

Of course, we’ll be instigating this by having a rocking good time with a whole bunch of our friends: plenty of bands, visual and spoken word artists, film… come join us as we quite literally fight for our right to party. The festival is spread over two venues with overlapping bills, so if you can’t make one day you can come to the other – there’s no excuses! Saturday will have much more music, while the emphasis on the Sunday will be more art… though both will have plenty of each! :D

And, to the cynics and the sceptics and the apathetic, remember Martin Niemöller’s warning : “First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.”*

(Big thanks to Adam Hartshorne for the wicked posters/flyers :D )

EVENT ON LAST.FM : http://www.last.fm/event/1228061

FAQs:
Q: Is it free?
A: Day 1 is entry on donation, Day 2 is free. All money will go towards the costs and towards artists (if enough).

Q: Is it outdoors?
A: No, the venues are indoors primarily apart from the campfire and some extra fun stuff we’ll be doing at Krankenhouse. So yes, we’ll be doing this even if it rains.

Q: What is the difference between the days given that there is an overlap in artists?
A: The Saturday has more of an emphasis on music with a huge bill of artists playing, while the Sunday will have an artier emphasis. They are in very different locations with different characteristics and we’ll be doing different stuff at each

Q: This is nonsense. The government and police are great, always act in our best interest, full of both the most competent and most benevolent people (and will be forevermore). What is more, they can be trusted with all our data, as can all the third party companies contracted to use it – all of this stuff is absolutely necessary to protect us from terrorists. 9-11 would never have happened if they had ID cards. What the heck’s a festival going to change anyway? Nothing to hide, nothing to fear, I say! I’m not coming!
A: I’ll try to hide my tears.

Q: Did you make that last question up?
A: Yes.
