The recording process can be a difficult affair (http://vimeo.com/14090371). You want to get it just right, so you spend weeks rehearsing the songs so that when the red light goes on, you just play it the way you want it. But the performance is just the part of the process.
Mixing comes next. You need to balance the sounds, edit the performances to tweak the sounds and get everything balanced, and remove the dead space and unwanted noise. Often the band, or at least one designated member will have a direct input in part of all of this process. After all, it is their sound, and you want it to be as close to the realisation that you have in your head as possible.
Then comes the mastering. At this point, you send away the tracks to let someone else polish the songs to the finished version. You might also send examples of the kind of sound you are going for, but you need to leave the process largely in the hands of the professional. Mastering is an important part of the recording process, and can be overlooked by those les familiar with the reasons behind it as less important, when actually it could arguably be the most important part of all.
Producers need to hold off on trying to get the CD sound. Don’t over edit or compress the songs. Mastering is designed to bring out the richness of the music, and balance the overall level of the music so that the tracks ‘flow’ and sound like a coherent whole, and over production can severely limit how much room the guys doing the mastering can manipulate the finished product to get the best sound across as many platforms as possible.
We’re off on tour in a matter of days, and were looking to get the finished before we leave, but when you’re looking for as close to perfection as possible, it can be tough to meet the deadline. We got it back and though 95% happy, wanted the last few changes made. The dilemma was how close to the line do we dare take it? Perfection (or as near as we can get it) or send back for more polish at the risk of pushing back the date past when we’re off on tour?
We were nearly there, but Malcolm, being the perfectionist he is (there seem to be a lot of them around here) wanted more, to the frustration of Bass (“ngngngngngngnngngngngngnngngngngngngngnngngngngngngngngngngngngnngngngngngngngngnngngngngngngngnngngngngng” @DjevaraBand) who is racing against time to have the finished press for the tour.
“hahaha fuck nuggets”, said Malcolm.
They hold their breath…

Well, what a day. An excellent affair. Some crazy-ness obviously, but none more or less than we have grown to expect from Anton and the Bleak (www.myspace.com/bleakblues) crew. Poetry, acoustic bands, ales, fireworks, and at least one herbal Viagra (“yes it’s working; but not on you”).
Thanks also to Ben McLees of This Is Radio Silence. My second show with him went quite well. Kept it short, so I made fewer mistakes than I might have done, given the lack of recent rehearsals. Very much enjoyed our Djevara Redux set, though by that time my fingers were pretty stiff. Next time I go to an all-day outdoor festival I must remember to bring a) some food, b) warm clothes and/or c) more spirits for internal fortification.

What a weekend! Tonight (sat 28th August) sees Djevara return to one of the best small venues in South London, The Fox & Firkin (Lewisham), with an astonishing line-up which includes our absolute favourite band Thumpermonkey Lives! (new record out on GENIN on Mon 6th Sept! It’s awesome!) and Poino who feature Chuckles (of The Display Team, who also have a fantabulous record out through the Genin stables!). Could be too awesome for words.
Then… there’s more! Djevara (Redux) play at guerrilla festival WAR IN THE PARK in Burgess Park on Sunday afternoon. There is quite a stunning range of acts who’ve decided to leave the mics and amps behind and bring along acoustics to make war. Confirmed sets from She Makes War, Bleak, This Is Radio Silence, and others…
It shall take place here http://bit.ly/daPVl5

So! We’re beginning to understand the kind of Deja Vu that Marty (McFly) himself experienced, as the time is already almost upon us for Djevara to head back in to the studio to record the much-awaited second part of “The Rising Tide”. I can barely contain my excitement (even recovering from pretty bad whiplash after a hit&run incident over the weekend) – we’re confident that as long as we can capture it this could well be our best record yet, bringing together elements of everything that’s come before and yet fresh, exciting and new. I honestly haven’t felt this excited going in to a recording since before “God Is White” (that’s six years!), I really can’t wait – hopefully it will put everything else into context, as well as set us up for where we’re aiming in the future – and we’re inviting you to be a part of it!

No prevarication, mealy-mouthing or political correctness beyond this point, some things need to be said loud and clearly: the disgraceful behaviour of the Israeli government towards the Palestinians – bombings, demolishings, assassinations, killings, wall-building, subjugation, blockading, oppression and terror needs to end. It’s as if history is playing some kind of cruel, ironic joke. Read more…

March 8th sees the official release of part 1 of our new record. For those who’ve been sleeping at the back of the class (it’s been a long winter after all!), the main reason we decided to do it like this is primarily to document two quite different phases in the history of the band and so release something in what seemed an intellectually honest way. Which leads me on to a warning to our friends/fans/followers – we are proud of what we have produced in “Corsa Al Ribasso”, but we have to acknowledge it is not an easy record to listen to or to appreciate. We make no apologies, but I feel it fair to warn those who have supported us thus far and may not quite be expecting it. The period leading up to and right into recording this record was a difficult time in the lives of the members of the band and the band itself, amidst all the familiar characters of disappointment, frustration and betrayal in our personal lives and ambitions, and in recording it we opted for honesty instead of beauty. To say this record was (is) in some ways an exercise in catharsis would be to understate it. It is the document of band of members having survived (metaphorical) Armageddon, stared oblivion in the face and jumped into the abyss regardless, re-learning who they are and re-acquainting themselves with what even seemed alien instruments at times. So- sorry, definitely no singles or anything approaching easy listening here. I’m not even sure we were still trying to provide ‘entertainment’ in the same sense as before, pretentious as that sounds. It’s fucked up, weird, hard work and challenging you to invest in it enough just to GET it. I fully expect most won’t. That’s ok. That’s what part 2′s for.”CORSA AL RIBASSO” AVAILABLE TO ORDER NOW FROM www.genin.co.uk
